Area Board Member Training

New Online Resource Available for LME Board Members

Now there is a quick and easy way to get board member training without travel or lost work time! The NC School of Government at the University of North Carolina has developed an online training program for the governing board members of Local Management Entities (LMEs). The program is publicly available, at no charge, at www.sog.unc.edu/programs/mentalhealth/.

The Essential Governing Responsibilities of LME Boards consists of five modules:

  • LME Boards' Legal Responsibilities
  • Budgeting and Finance
  • Making Decisions and Setting Direction
  • Accountability
  • Working with Others

Each module has a narrated presentation matched with visual information and learning activities. The learner can pause a module at any time, review earlier material, and download related resources.

Although this training was developed for LME board members, it has been suggested that there are modules within it that would be valuable to other leaders. The "Legal Responsibilities" and "Working With Others" modules would also be valuable to CFAC members, while "Budget and Finance" and "Legal Responsibilities" would be useful for County Commissioners.

Anyone interested can access the training. Once on the School of Government's mental health page ( www.sog.unc.edu/programs/mentalhealth), an individual can review several screens (pre-introduction) to learn about the training prior to registering. Registration is required in order to take the training modules, but this simply requires the participant's email address. There is also an evaluation at the end of each module to test the satisfaction of the user.
