Each area authority is governed by an area board. The area board is comprised of one county commissioner from each of the three counties SEC serves, and the commissioners appoint the remaining area board members. These remaining board members are citizens which must include representatives of various constituent and professional groups specified by statutes governing SEC. As the governing body, the area board exercises the powers and duties conferred by the General Assembly. Area board members serve three-year terms and are eligible for reappointment for an additional three-year term, with county commissioners' terms being concurrent with their terms as county commissioners.
